The Big Serve was born out of a brainstorming session during a small group meeting at the Plainfield location of Community Christian Church. As the story goes, it was just an ordinary group of men that felt called to do something about the needs in their local community. The idea of a weekend of service to the community stuck, and they were faithful enough to see it into existence. Plainfield United Methodist Church was doing something very similar called Change the World, and at some point the two groups became aware of one another. Resisting the temptation to compete, they banded together with support from the Village of Plainfield, and began to coordinate projects together to maximize their collective impact for the community.
Before long it became clear that other community and faith organizations were also interested in serving the community, and the Big Serve-Change the World evolved into a collective of passionate organizations that ignore perceived “boundaries” to focus on what they have in common – service to the needy. Today there are seven core organizations of diverse backgrounds that provide strategic direction, representing more than 20 local municipal, faith and nonprofit groups.
Corporate and local sponsors, as well as other donations from individual supporters in the community are critical to our mission, and we are always looking for resources that can help us grow our capacity to meet more and greater needs. You can see a list of current partners on our website. www.thebigserve.info
To cap everything off, all volunteers and sponsors are welcomed to celebrate together at the end of the day on BIG SERVE Sunday with a FREE picnic at Plainfield Central High School. Doing good feels great, and we believe strongly in celebrating success together!
Join us, and your hands will bring hope and restoration to your own community.
